Directional terms and meanings:
- Anterior – the front or before
- Caudal – the tail or, in humans, the coccyx
- Cranial / Cephalic – the head
- Deep – farthest from the body surface within the body
- Distal – away from an attached base
- Dorsal – the back (equivalent to posterior)
- Inferior – below or at a lower level
- Lateral – away from the body's longitudinal axis
- Medial – toward the body's longitudinal axis
- Proximal – toward an attached base
- Posterior – the back or behind
- Superficial – at, near, or relatively close to the body surface
- Superior – above; at a higher level or toward the head
- Ventral – the abdominal side (equivalent to anterior)
