Panhellenic Festivals

Isthmian Games
They were a Panhellenic festival from 581, although they were a local festival before that time. They took place on the Isthmus of Corinth in honour of Poseidon, being held in the first and third years of each four-year Olympiad. The prize was a wreath of dry celery.

Nemean Games
They date to 573 and were held at Nemea in honour of Zeus. They took place in the second and fourth years of each Olympiad. The prize was a crown of fresh wild celery.

Olympic Games
They were founded in 776 at Olympia in honour of Zeus, and held every four years. Originally, they lasted for one day only, but later they lasted for five days. The principle event was the foot race of one length of the stadium. Prizes were chaplets of wild olive. The games were abolished by the Roman emperor in 393 CE.

Pythian Games
Although having been held earlier, they were reorganized in 582. They took place at Delphi in honour of Apollo. Originally, they were held every eight years, but later they were in the third year of each Olympiad. The prize was a crown of bay leaves.
