- Oleo-resin
- A natural exudate from plants, or an aromatic liquid preparation, extracted from botanical matter using solvents.
It consists almost entirely of volatile oils and fixed oils, waxes, and the resins. Oleoresins are generally used for flavour, as those found in Cassia or Paprika. They are produced by extraction with such nonpolar solvents as petroleum ether, which are then removed by evaporation. This kind of extraction can only be performed in a well equipped laboratory, since the solvents are dangerously flammable and toxic to inhale.
