Introduction

There are 120 or more species of the genus Acer, about 90 of which are listed in this section. The genus is divided into sections. Each page includes one section. Some sections are divided into series. These are shown in an orange font.

The following are listed: species (in Latin), common name (in English), height of tree, size of leaf and the number of lobes, size of the fruit, and the area where the species is native. All measurements are in metric, with the British numbers being in parentheses. Subspecies, alternate names of species, varieties, hybrids, and cultivars are not listed.

Except for one species in Indonesia, all species are limited to the Northern Hemisphere. The largest number of species are native to eastern Asia, with only a few to North America. The most popular species is the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum), with over 250 cultivars.

The following species are suited for bonsai: A. buergerianum, A. campestre, A. ginnala, A. griseum, A. japonicum, A. monspessulanum, A. palmatum, and A. rubrum.
