Ecology Discovery Foundation (Ecoglobe)
Website: http://www.ecoglobe.org/nz/index.htm
Ecoglobe provides neutral and realistic information about the environment so that people can then make informed choices. Although we are all concerned, and the environmental trends are increasingly worrying, factual evidence is abundant but not readily accessible, neither to the general public nor to its leaders. These web pages provide information that is based on the highest standard of factual ecological and economic knowledge, prepared in cooperation with renowned and absolutely independent scientists. 'Sustainability' is the buzz-word of our time. In simple terms, 'sustainability' means that we can continue doing what we do for a long time. But the environmental problems which we encounter, as pollution, ozone hole, climate change, soil erosion, overfishing, and others, show that there is something wrong with what we are doing, and that must be changed. Presently, our ways of living are clearly not sustainable. Therefore, sustainability must come to mean organising our lives in such a way that the planet can go on for a longer time, into the next century and beyond.

Environmental Education Directory of New Zealand
Website: http://www.eednz.org.nz/
This National Directory is an outcome of several years of strategic planning for the sustainable management of our environment. The Government's Environment 2010 Strategy (September 1995) identified environmental education as an important means of encouraging responsible behaviour and enabling people to participate effectively in protecting and managing New Zealand's natural and physical resources. This led to the production of the 1998 National Strategy for Environmental Education -– Learning to Care for Our Environment. The range of materials included in this directory is extensive and includes a variety of approaches for education about the environment (information about environmental phenomena), education in the environment (field studies and other outdoor activities) and education for or with the environment (activities directed at influencing environmental concerns).

Kakapo Recovery Program
Website: http://www.kakaporecovery.org.nz/kakapointro.html
There are six billion people on earth, but only 86 kakapo left on the planet. The kakapo holds all kinds of world records for birds. It is the heaviest parrot in the world. It is the only parrot that has a 'lek' breeding system and is probably the longest-lived bird species in the world. Working with scientists and others, this recovery program works hard to ensure that this bird does not go the way of so many that are being lost to the world. This site is an excellent resource for students.

Mother's Against Genetic Engineering
Website: http://www.madge.net.nz/
MADGE is a rapidly growing network of politically non-aligned women who have decided to resist actively the use of genetically engineered organisms in their food and on their land. It is also networking nationally and has created an infrastructure that collects, correlates, and distributes information relating to genetic engineering. MADGE believes that GE ingredients must be proven to be 100% safe before any is fed to their families. Children are not guinea pigs, and they want the freedom to choose what is grown and eaten. MADGE also supports those companies who have committed to a GE-free status and boycotts and lobbies those who have not.

New Zealand Sub-Antarctic Islands
Website: http://whc.unesco.org/sites/877.htm
A World Heritage Site, these particular islands consist of five groups (the Snares, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, and Campbell Island) in the Southern Ocean south-east of New Zealand. The islands, lying between the Antarctic and subtropical convergences and the seas, have a high level of productivity, biodiversity, wildlife population densities, and endemism among birds, plants, and invertebrates. They are particularly notable for the large number and diversity of pelagic seabirds and penguins that nest there. There are 126 bird species in total, including 40 seabirds of which five breed nowhere else in the world.

Otago Peninsula
Website: http://www.albatross.org.nz/

For instance, the Royal Albatross Colony at Taiaroa Head, on the tip of the Peninsula, is the only mainland breeding colony of albatross in the world and, underneath the peace of the nature reserve lie the tunnels of Fort Taiaroa, established over 100 years ago to counter the threat of invasion from tsarist Russia.

Reduce Your Rubbish
Website: http://www.reducerubbish.govt.nz/
New Zealanders throw away 3.6 million tonnes of rubbish every year. If this were measured in 9 tonne buses, it would equal 400,000 buses of rubbish -- that is more than 1,000 buses every day! The crazy thing is that about 65 percent of all of the "rubbish" could be recycled or composted instead. Burning rubbish is not a solution as this practice pollutes the air and may release toxic substances. Find out your options.

Tiki's Guide to Genetic Engineering
Website: http://www.oneworld.org/penguin/genetics/home.html
This children's site helps explain a difficult subject. Genetic engineering is about scientists altering the 'recipes' for making life -- the genes which you find in all living things. Doing this is very clever and could be very useful. But it all seems to be happening much too quickly, and nobody knows what the effects of making and eating such living things will be. Many kinds of life could be damaged. Suppose people eat 'genetic' food for many years. Will they be harmed by it? Nobody knows for sure.

Weed Control Manual for the Bay of Plenty
Website: http://www.envbop.govt.nz/default.asp
This site gives an illustrated list of weeds, sorted by common and botanical names. It also has information on identification and the impact they make on the environment and management. The manual is designed to help you recognise and control weeds, but contains only those weeds that occur in a specific area of New Zealand, and only those which are a threat to environmental values or which must be controlled by statute. Some weeds are a minimal threat to mainland areas, but must be watched for on islands. Others are abundant in one place and rare in another. Yet others are new to some reserves and may be kept out of others by quick control action. The manual is designed to provide you with information to enable you not only to identify the weed with which you are dealing, but also to select the best control method available.
