Parque Nacional Baritu

Baritú National Park has an area of 72,000 hectares (177,916 acres), and is located in Santa Victoria Department, in the north of Salta Province near the border of Bolivia. The protected area belongs to Las Yungas eco-region, which is composed by "subandinas" hills, whose heights go from 400 to 3000 metres (1,312.to 9,843 feet). It is bordered by montainous cordons. The park was created in 1974.

The most important river which crosses the park is the Lipeo. The park is the most northern of the Argentinian protected areas. It protects the Montana jungle. It is is the only tropical park of Argentina.

There are problems in trying to conserve the area. Illegal hunting and wood-cutting exist. Domestic cattle go into the area for grazing. Settlers carve out farms. The authorities do not have the resources to police the park as is needed. Probably the greatest threat is the proposed damming of the rivers that flow through the park, particularly the Bermejo River.
