The elementary school was widespread by the early years of the Roman Empire. All Jews were required to have a knowledge of the language of their religious liturgy. Fees for schooling were low enough that all children could attend.

Children went to school at the age of seven and continued until they were in their teens. Instruction was mainly individual and by memorization. Disciploine could be very severe.
