Introduction
Although the vehicles are primarily tanks that were used during the war, there are a few other vehicles included. Tanks that were not used or very little have not been included. This is not a complete listing for the six countries.
For the navies listed, not every class of warship is included. A number of ships were constructed at the time of World War I and the years following. Those whose dates are after 1945 were commenced during the war, and some were intended for use against the Japanese after the European war had been completed. The displacements are usually those of the basic ships. The lengths are mainly overall lengths, and to the nearest whole foot. The complements sometimes include air force personnel on aircraft carriers. Peacetime numbers are usually smaller. Flag ships have a higher number. Numerous ships have been renamed once or more. Not all ships sunk in battle are included.
The reference books used three types of tons, long ton (LT), short ton (ST), and metric ton (MT). LT is British, and ST is American. Conversions have been made in the charts, when necessary. Here are some useful equivalents:
- 1 metric ton = 1.102 short tons (1 short ton = 2,000 pounds)
- 1 metric ton = .984 long tons (1 long ton = 2,240 pounds)
- 1 kilogram = 2.20456 pounds
- 1 metre = 3.282 feet
- 1 kilometre per hour = .6215 miles per hour
